In the first week of March, more than 800 people participated in about 100 round table discussions about Antwerp’s Scheldt Quays, sharing their ideas and dreams by themes that are related to the reconstruction of the Quays. During the symposium, the outcome of these round tables was presented. In the next phase of the development of the Master Plan, the designers will incorporate and valuate these suggestions and remarks.
The symposium was a vigorous mix of information and reflection.
Kristiaan Borret (Antwerp’s City Architect), João Nunes (PROAP) and Guido Geenen (WIT) presented the Master Plan for the Scheldt Quays, the vision of the project team and the guidelines for the realization of the new Scheldt Quays, followed by a question round and a debate with the public, the designers, Antwerp’s City Architect, W&Z and the city’s planning service.
Guest lecturers Marta Moretti (Assistant Director of International Centre Cities on Water – Venice), Clara Mendes (Polo Universitário Alto de Ajud, Lisbon) and Eric Van Hooydonk (professor Maritime Law, University of Antwerp) gave a critical reflection on the Master Plan. Michèle Laruë-Charlus and Thierry Guichard from Bordeaux and Maria Teresa Brotto (Venice) gave a lecture about the rehabilitation of the waterfront of Bordeaux and Venice.
The second day, professionals and community based organizations discussed the Master Plan’s vision on the various areas of the Quays at thematic round tables. The results of these group discussions were presented on the last day, followed by a panel debate with the designers of PROAP and WIT Architecten, Prof. Dr. Jef Van Den Broeck (KULeuven), and Kristiaan Borret. The outcome of the symposium’s round tables will also be picked up for the final phase of the Master Planning process.
