Redevelopment of the Fenestrelle Fort

The Fort of Fenestrelle is the main alpine fortress of Europe, exceptional military architecture, planned and realized between 1727 and 1850 and landmark of the Province of Turin. The fortified complex has an extension of about 3 km, with a difference in height of 635 m and it is composed by, besides the wall, three forts and other defensive structures, with an entire area of building of 1.300.000 m2.

The proposal starts with an idea of the fort as a structure that helps the reading of the landscape and with the reinvention of a relationship between the space and the nature. Main planning assumptions are: an introduction of a new human presence in the mountain; and a recover of a traditional ecology of agriculture and farming, using the fortifications net as point of support.
